After the Louisiana Purchase, the Garden District was one of the first neighborhoods to be developed. The name for the area of New Orleans comes from the beautiful, large gardens found throughout. The Garden District is found near the Central Business District and it borders Uptown, as well.

This section of the neighborhood is known as the commercial center.
