History of Marigny
Marigny was formed in the 19th century by an eccentric Creole millionaire named Jean-Bernard Xavier Philippe de Marigny de Mandeville--what a mouthful! The land was previously his family's plantation but was sold to the city of New Orleans as it expanded.
Broad Elysian Fields Avenue was designated the Main Street of Marigny and was the first street in New Orleans to extend all the way down to the water of Lake Pontchartrain.
